Lloyd, Clayton was the foremost exponent of whaling and seafaring songs during the '50s, and this album was his magnum opus -- his singing is authentically rough and unembellished, making the folk stars of the '50s and '60s sound like the most pretentious things on two legs, yet he manages a subtle sweetness in his tone.

Some of the track spellings are 'dodgy' but the booklet mentions that the recordings were made by Alan Lomax, and maybe 6 tracks are by McColl & Seeger. Another two feature Jeannie Robertson (?) and two are bagpipe tracks. The rest of the singers were obviously recorded on a Lomax field trip. A rarity? Maybe. 1) Pipe Tunes.
